Roll 2d6 plus mods and try to exceed 8+ to succeed at a task. The rules have been updated and modernized a bit, but the system is still basically the same. In fact, some of the tech available–if you choose to make use of it–would let you do a pretty decent cyberpunk game, if that’s your pleasure.

There are communication and data technologies that aren’t throwbacks to the antiquated tech of the 1970s. Computers no longer weigh tons and take up huge volumes of space. Then I discovered Mongoose Traveller, an updated version of the game. I liked Traveller, but it was written in the 70s and the technology of “the future” was, in many ways, pretty lackluster compared to the real world. I’ve played countless other games since, but I’ve periodically toyed with trying to find a new spacefaring RPG that would suit me. I have fond memories of playing Traveller for years back when it first came out. Spaceports, ancient civilisations, air/rafts, cold steel blades, laser carbines, far distant worlds, and exotic alien beasts this is the futuristic universe of Traveller, the original and classic science fiction roleplaying game. The Traveler Core Rule book contains everything you need to create one of these adventurers and begin exploring the galaxy.

The game includes information on the Traveller Universe, creating characters, careers, starship combat, trading between star systems, running businesses, player aides and much more. Not only is it fun, but also simple and easy to run, created by an experienced referee. It doesn't contain any setting information as far as I know.Mongoose Traveller 2nd Edition PDF helps players build characters to explore the galaxy. Not as gorgeous as the Mongoose version, but playable and cheaper. Cephus Deluxe is Classic Traveller with the numbers filed of, basically a retro clone + minor improvements. However, for being a contemporary of OD&D (the three little brown books, if you will) it holds up surprisingly well.

The game is dated and it shows sometimes. You can find get as a POD from DTRPG for arround $20. If you want to do some archeology of the hobby, get the Traveller book which consolidates the orginal 3 little black books into a single hardcover. If you want to play the game, get the Mongoose version. Any "rounded RPG library" should comprise at least one edition. Traveller is a classic and very much old school in it's own right (I'd include Traveller in my OSR but the D&D folks disagree). There is a free version which has 95% of what you want from SWN anyway. Even if you end up playing another system, SWN is worth getting for the random tables alone.

SWN is OD&D with a boltet on skill system an tons of random tables for sandbox play. Click to expand.I'd say Stars Without Number is problably more Space OSR than Traveller.
